North Dakota

The Peace Garden State.  Land of the Dakotas.  The Roughrider State.  Great Central.  The Flickertail State.

So there’s a statistic I read online that says North Dakota is the least-visited state in the Union.  If that’s true – and I don’t know if it is – I really don’t see why.  North Dakota is home to 63 different wildlife refuges which cover over 290,000 acres.  Plus, there are 11 Wetland Management areas that have over 254,000 acres dedicated to Waterfowl Production areas; think of the opportunity to go hiking and capture the variety of wild- and plantlife on camera!  Jamestown hosts the National Buffalo Museum Preserve, where they maintain a live bison herd – including White Cloud, Dakota Miracle and Dakota Legend, the rare albino bison considered sacred by several Native American tribes.  Dickinson is home to the Dakota Dinosaur Museum, where you can view full-scale skeletal casts of the Allosaurus, Stegosaurus and others, you can see and learn about rocks and minerals from all over the world.  Up north on the border the towns of Dunseith ND USA and Boissevain, MB CA proudly maintain the International Peace Garden.  The city of Grand Forks hosts the world’s largest French Fry feed during Potato Bowl USA – they set a new world’s record in 2006 by serving 4,620 pounds of french fries.  There is an amazing amount to do and see here in North Dakota.

And famous people?  North Dakota has ’em, too.  Lawrence Welk was born in Strasburg; his family’s homestead is now a tourist attraction.  Peggy Lee the singer, songwriter and actress, was born in Jamestown, as was writer Louis L’Amour.  And baseball legend Roger Maris may have been born in Hibbing, MN, but his family moved to Fargo in 1946, where they lived until Maris retired from baseball and moved to Florida.
