The Show-me State. Mother of the West. The Bullion State. The Ozark State. Pennsylvania of the West. The Iron Mountain State.
The sum total of what I knew about Missouri before starting to research the state boiled down to two facts: It’s part of MIMAL; one of its largest cities is Kansas City, which confused the heck out of me. Boy, was I missing out! Missouri is where both the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails began, as well as the origin of the Pony Express. The first successful parachute jump from a moving airplane was made by Captain Berry at St. Louis, in 1912. At the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Richard Blechyden served tea with ice, inventing iced tea; an ice cream vendor ran out of cups and asked a waffle vendor to help by rolling up waffles to hold ice cream, inventing the ice-cream cone.
Walt Disney grew up in Marceline; Harry S Truman was born in Lamar and died in Kansas City, Missouri. Other famous folk from this state include T.S. Eliot, Mark Twain, Yogi Berra, Martha “Calamity Jane” Canary, Scott Joplin and Walter Kronkite. Aunt Jemima pancake flour – the first ready-mix food ever to be introduced – was invented in 1889 in Saint Joseph, Missouri: and at eight feet, eleven inches tall, the tallest man in medical history, Robert Pershing Wadlow, was from St. Louis.
