Kansas

The Sunflower State.  The Garden State.  Midway, USA.  The Wheat State.  The Battleground of Freedom.  Tornado Alley.

One of my earliest memories of Kansas is one of flat grassland.  I was probably about third grade or so, and we drove out to Wichita to visit Dad’s brother Pat and his family.  Uncle Pat had settled in Kansas after his enlistment with the Air Force was up, to work for Boeing.   The house was single-story and just beyond the backyard was a wheat field stretching as far as the eye could see.   Not surprising that’s what I remember, given that in 1990 Kansas farmers grew enough wheat to make 33 billion loaves of bread, and in 1997 produced a record 492.2 million bushels of wheat – enough to make 35.9 billion loaves!  Kansas is also home to salt mines, the nation’s second-largest producer of beef cattle, and the city of Wichita has been called the Air Capital of the World, hosting not only Boeing, but Cessna, Hawker Beechcraft and LearJet as well.

And if you want to talk about Wild West influence, well, Wyatt Earp, James “Wild Bill” Hickok and William “Bat” Masterson were three of the lawmen who kept the peace in Abilene, Dodge City and Wichita.  And Fort Riley, the cradle of the United States Cavalry for 83 years, was where George Custer formed the 7th Cavalry in 1866.  Ten years later, the 7th was nearly wiped out in the Battle of Little Big Horn.

Other famous people from Kansas include aviator Amelia Earhart, General and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, actor Buster Keaton, and actress Hattie McDaniel.
